In early 2019 RED completed an expansive upgrade to its CHW operations in building B511, which serves Eastman Business Park’s South region. The project is highlighted by the installation of a new 2,000 ton electric chiller. Equipped with five magnetic bearing refrigerant compressors, this state-of-the-art chiller operates at world-class efficiencies <0.15 kW/ton and is one of the largest of its kind in North America. To serve the new chiller RED also installed new vertical inline 300HP CHW pump and 250HP CW pump. These pumps are fully variable and have been optimized for energy efficiency. Other aspects of the project include controls upgrades to one of the existing 2,300 ton steam turbine driven chillers to improve operational dispatch; and the installation of over 50 thermostatically controlled chilled water recirculation valves to reduce excess CHW flow throughout the distribution system. The project was recently recognized by RG&E as the largest energy reduction project of 2018 through their C&I Rebate Program.
